A deep dive in Tuning Java Applications, Metrics, Profiling and Benchmarking, Concurrency and Memory Management, spiced with under-the-hood JVM details and debates around common performance issues of Java projects illustrated via a series of experiments distilled from real-life scenarios of hundreds of projects.

Tracing a Latency Bottleneck

Metrics: exposing and understanding Timers, Counters, Gauges, Percentiles
Java Flight Recorder (JFR): sample-based execution profiling, standard & custom JFR Events
Profiling using Glowroot, JMC, IntelliJ or jProfiler
Load testing using jMeter or Gatling: strategies, goals, pitfalls
Exercise: Trace common bottlenecks in a Spring Boot application
Distributed request tracing and time budgeting with Zipkin or Opentelemtry

Day 2

Java Concurrency

Thread Pool: mechanics, parameters, usage patterns, monitoring
Risks of multi*threading: race bugs, deadlocks, thread pool starvation
Blocking concurrency control with atomic primitives, synchronized blocks and collections
Non-blocking concurrency with CompletableFuture and/or Reactive Programming (see my other training)
Spring Framework support: ThreadPoolTaskExecutor, @Async, non-blocking REST Calls & Endpoints
Parallel Stream: when [not] to use?
Thread Local: best practices, thread hopping
Virtual Threads: pros/cons/pitfalls

Memory Management

Heap dump analysis: retained/shallow heap, GC Roots, profiling allocations
Exercise: Tracing 10 types of Memory Leaks (You can already investigate some heap dumps here)
Memory Efficiency Coding: data streamlining techniques
Caching: principles, parameters, risks (optional)

Just-In-Time (JIT) Compiler

JIT mechanics, dynamic optimizations
